The motor of the snowcat lulled the guests, already tired from the night of revelry, into a comfortable silence on the ride back down the mountain. The lights from the ski lifts lit up the snowy pathway, lending a magical spark to the evening. Margot found herself snuggled in next to Luke, not feeling awkward about it. She even allowed her head to tip onto his shoulder. Her eyes were closed, but she was not sleeping. She was carefully mapping out a plan to take Layla down. Okay, maybe not take her down per say, but if she was caught up as collateral damage in the investigation, well, natural consequences and all of that.
The cut of the engine roused the passengers as the snowcat stopped at the base of the mountain. The guests filed out the back with yawns and stretches.
Richard asked, âAnother night cap?â his voice raspy.
Everyone, including Iris, actually groaned. âNot tonight, Richard,â Brent said, patting his friend on the back. âThe best I can do is walk with you back to the hotel. Otherwise, thatâs a wrap for me.â
Margotâs black car pulled up then and she turned to the group. âI canât even offer you an evening stroll. Sorry guys, Iâm hopping in the car â that dinner wiped me out.â
Iris eyed the car, then Luke. Without missing a beat, she said, âI could use the exercise to wind down. Iâll join you fellas. Luke, why donât you keep Margot company?â
Luke stifled a yawn and scanned the length of the car. âYouâre not going to have to twist my arm. Margot, would you mind?â
Margot realized sheâd been holding her breath since Iris suggested it. Even though it was only five minutes, she found herself feeling almost giddy at the thought of being alone with him. Which was strange, since she had been alone with him all day, but something had shifted up at Cloud Nine. âNot at all,â she said.
Luke held the door open while she climbed in. âSee you at the hotel.â She waved at Iris and caught her discreet wink before Luke filled the doorway. He hopped in the seat next to her, his legs spread out, filling the back of the car. Margot didnât move her legs away when they leaned against hers. He tilted his head back and closed his eyes. âThat was a fun time.â
Margot took the chance to study his profile, his beard untrimmed and casually scruffy. His beanie was pushed down over his forehead and his eyelashes curled up, away from his cheeks, which were gently wind burnt, giving them a flushed look. Margot felt a pang in her chest. There was no denying it; he was handsome. Not handsome like anyone sheâd dated in the past, but the rugged, chipped tooth, tattoos, down to earth kind of handsome. She was positive he could fix a broken pipe. Wait, pipes? Why had her mind just gone there? She was sure he could handle unclogging a drain. No, she shook her head.
